Stunning marquetry cabinet

A highly original and one-off piece of craft. The designs are wonderfully created and must have taken many months to complete. Sadly I know nothing of its provenance. It took my eye in a little backstreet antique shop in Ulverston, birthplace of Stan Laurel on June 16, 1890. There’s a statue in the town which depicts him with his partner Oliver Hardy and the famous dog which appeared in many films – Laughing Gravy.

Anyway I was performing at Another Fine Fest (great name!) in Ulverston and went for a little walk and had busking money in my pocket (Silly Boy). Money doesn’t stay long therre and I came back to the lorry with this beauty and it stood proudly on my bay window. There’s a photo of it. I’m only parting with it because whenever I see it it brings a lump to my throat, missing my old six wheeler home.

Marquetry (also spelled as marqueterie; from the French marqueter, to variegate) is the art and craft of applying pieces of veneer to a structure to form decorative patterns or designs. (Thanks Wiki)
