The three chair balance
An illusion/stunt which I designed, built and performed for many years. There is not another like it anywhere in the world. You can find plenty of images of the climax of the routine and it has been filmed notably by Kai of Wierd Side. Watch his film (for just the chair balance section ff to 5:27) here. It also features as a theme in, and as part of the final scene in my latest film., to be shown at the 2025 Berlin film festival. See the trailer here
The build up raises tension in the audience like nothing else I have ever performed. In essence, to music that builds slowly, I carry a knife block with three (Babache) juggling knives up on a structure made of three folding wooden chairs and a plank. I build the structure as I climb it. ‘Three chairs, three knives, two hands, nine fingers!’. The whole is perched on a table. I climb to the top of the three chairs, stand on the top one and juggle the knives. I only fell off once and that was because the second chair had a minor fault in the construction (I discovered afterwards) and the wood split. I was only slightly hurt in the fall. I have since repaired and strengthened that chair and performed it again since.
The routine needs a person with courage and confidence but the outfit has a number of hidden gimmicks which make it a lot easier than it looks. These would be explained to the purchaser and I would personally assist and support any performer in rehearsal. and performance. Whilst the finale of juggling knives makes it a particularly spectacular stunt, juggling with anything once at the top would be almost as good.
Everything is included in the sale, the knives, the knife block, three chairs and a spare, a travelling case for everything and extensive training. Provide your own courage.
