The Travelling Theatre by John Crockett

£200.00

Published by Powell Perry (A Perry Colour Book), 1945

A fair copy of an exceptionally rare wartime title from Powell Perry. During WW2, Perry was stationed at the camouflage centre Farnham Castle where he would have rubbed shoulders with artists such as Julian Trevelyan and Roland Penrose and the magician Jasper Maskelyne, Pauline Baynes to name just a few. Perry's family owned a printing firm in Putney and he persuaded some of the artists at the Camouflage Centre to moonlight, producing a number of wartime children's titles modelled to some extent on Carrington's Picture Puffin series. The author and artist, John Crockett [1918-1986] was a theatre designer and director, as well as an accomplished artist. In 1944 he and his wife founded the Compass Players, a travelling theatre company that performed classic works to audiences who would not normally have the opportunity to see plays by such writers as Checkhov, Fry, Moliere and Synge. The figure of the director within is likely a self-portrait.

This charming battered booklet gives a lovely look at the life of a travelling theatre. It is illustrated with beautiful coloured sketches also by the author.
